                                                                                                               - Robert M. Pirsig

Max Hillman is presently a fourth-year student at the University of California, Santa Barbara. He plans to graduate with a double major in the disciplines of English and Psychology. Upon graduating, Hillman plans to travel abroad in South America, a dream of his since his parents first took him out of the country to Europe when he was 12. His academic pursuits are inspired by his belief that the skills acquired from a thorough and comprehensive examination of the English language and the influential works that associate it were necessary in the past, will be in the future, and are especially important today in a society where true, productive communication continues to suffer. Ideally, he would like to have a career in the marketing field but Hillman also enjoys writing prose and poetry, and is even expanding a detective fiction story he wrote last fall into what he hopes to be his first novel.

Max was born and raised just outside of Detroit, Michigan before his father's career brought his family west. The majority of his formative years were spent in Marin County, California, a hippie's paradise and millionaire's playground right in San Francisco's backyard. Growing up here he attained a knowledge of affluence, an understanding of commitment and hard work, the desire for success, and an affinity for brunettes, the latter being the only one he doesn't struggle with from time to time. Apart from these values he was surrounded by geographic and physical beauty unmatched by any other place he had known, until now. He is proud to call Santa Barbara (well, Goleta, whatever) his current home and is admittedly sad that his tenure here is coming to an end.

Outside of the classroom Max enjoys just about every facet of athletics, from participating to arguing senselessly with his roommates over a trade in their Fantasy Football league. In fact, his passion for the sport of Basketball is perhaps the only thing keeping him healthy as it forces him off his ass and into the Rec-Cen at least three times a week. Apart from sports, he loves movies: Some Like it Hot, Moonrise Kingdom (anything by Wes Anderson really), and Stepbrothers, to name a few. He has always regretted his falling out with piano lessons in fifth-grade but continues to listen to and enjoy the music of those more accomplished than he. Some of his favorite artists include: G-Eazy, The BeatlesLana Del Rey, and as of late Isaiah Rashaad (he swore to me these were good songs). Lastly, Max likes to think of himself as a carefree, easygoing person who does not like to deny himself the simple pleasures of life, like getting rest before class tomorrow. Goodnight.
